Application Process
What is the Application Process for a Commercial Driver's License?
Now that you're familiar with the requirements for a CDL, let's dive into the application process. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the steps to obtain your commercial driver's license.
Obtain your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)
To begin, you'll need to apply for a CLP, which allows you to practice driving a commercial vehicle under supervision. Visit your local DMV to submit your application, provide required documents, and pass the written knowledge test.
Complete CDL training
While not mandatory, enrolling in a CDL training program can significantly improve your chances of passing the skills test. CDL training schools provide both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel practice. See a list of schools here.
Schedule your CDL skills test
After holding your CLP for at least 14 days, you can schedule your skills test at a DMV-approved testing location.
Pass the skills test
Demonstrate your ability to inspect, control, and safely operate a commercial vehicle during the skills test.
Obtain your CDL
Once you pass the skills test, you'll receive your CDL from the DMV, allowing you to legally operate commercial vehicles.
