What are the Requirements for a Commercial Driver's License?

Are you considering a career as a commercial driver? If so, you'll need to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) to legally operate certain types of vehicles. In this blog post, we'll outline the requirements and eligibility criteria you need to meet before applying for a CDL.

Most states require you to be at least 18 years old to apply for a CDL, but you must be 21 years or older to drive across state lines or transport hazardous materials.

You must possess a valid driver's license from your state of residence before applying for a CDL.

Applicants must provide proof of residency and citizenship, or lawful permanent residency, in the United States.

A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination is required to ensure you're physically fit to operate a commercial vehicle. This includes vision, hearing, and general health assessments. Here is a link to the FMCSA's details on medical requirements.

The written test covers topics such as traffic laws, safe driving practices, and vehicle operation. Applicants must pass this test to be eligible for a CDL. See here to find a CDL School close to you.

The skills test assesses your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle, including vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and on-road driving.

Meeting these requirements is the first step in obtaining a commercial driver's license. Once you fulfill these eligibility criteria, you can move on to the application process, which we will cover in our next chapter here.
